What 15,677 research records say about rhythm and ADHD

In 2025, a research team screened 15,677 records looking at rhythm training and its effects. After applying rigorous inclusion criteria, only 10 studies made the cut.
That number is worth sitting with. It means the field is young, and most of what's been published isn't yet rigorous enough to lean on heavily.
What the included studies showed
Results were promising but mixed. The authors saw enough signal to call for more and better research, and suggested that training dose (how much, how often) likely matters.
Promising-but-mixed is not a marketing slogan. It is, however, the honest state of rhythm-specific research, and we'd rather tell you that than oversell.
Where the stronger evidence lives
The broader music-training literature is further along. A 2024 meta-analysis of 22 controlled studies found music training improved inhibition control in children, with moderate-to-large effects in the randomized trials. And the timing-deficit picture in ADHD itself is well established across motor, perceptual, and anticipatory domains.
